"A MICHIGAN WOMAN"

Hope in the Heartland

Sports fans of a certain age may recall what happened in 1989, on the eve of the men’s NCAA basketball tournament. University of Michigan Head Coach Bill Frieder announced that he accepted the head coaching job at Arizona State. Frieder publicly said that, upon Michigan completing play in March Madness, he would move on to ASU.

Not so fast, said venerable Michigan Athletic Director Bo Schembechler. Schembechler, a fiery man who for many years was a great football coach at Michigan, announced that Frieder was immediately terminated. In what is one of the all-time great sports quotes, Schembechler famously said, “A Michigan man will coach Michigan!” The rest, as they say, is history as Michigan, led by assistant coach Steve Fischer, won the NCAA championship.

This week, “a Michigan woman,” Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel, uttered a quote worthy of the ages. It was as straightforward, and matter of fact, as what Bo Schembechler said 34 years ago. Announcing she was bringing felony charges against 16 Michigan residents who participated in a fake elector scheme to overturn 2020 presidential election results, Nessel stated she believes that “a couple of years later, there should be some accountability.”

Nessel is correct. Serious crimes, a.k.a. felonies, were committed in December 2020 and January 2021. To date, no one near or at the top of the white-collar hierarchy, who orchestrated those crimes, has been held accountable.

Action figures

AG Nessel passed along her investigation to the Department of Justice in January 2022, just a month after the fake elector scheme was hatched and executed. Under the misdirection of timid U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland, DOJ claimed to be looking into fake elector fraud in Michigan.

Yet, almost a year passed with little action, although Garland did finally make a decisive move appointing Jack Smith as special counsel last November. Even so, too much time has been wasted while criminals who conspired to overturn the election and overthrow our government saunter along with their daily lives.

In January of this year, fed up with Garland’s Nancy Pelosi-style dilly-dallying (you remember how unsure Pelosi was, when it came to impeaching the obviously criminal Trump), Michigan AG Nessel re-ignited her state investigation.

Nessel joins the at-one-time very reluctant Manhatten District Attorney Alvin Bragg, who belatedly caught prosecutorial religion and indicted Trump on financial crimes, for hush money payments Trump made to a porn star.

Special counsel Jack Smith has proven that, like Nessel, he subscribes to actions speak louder than words. In just over 6 months, Smith has indicted Trump in the Mar-a-Lago classified documents case and, just this week, delivered a letter informing Trump he is a “target” in the January 6 investigation.

Seasoned legal analysts all but guarantee Trump will be indicted for his role in the January 6 coup attempt. If this is true, it will be the third indictment of Trump since early-April. (Three felony indictments, just since April, but there are still bozos defending the indefensible thug Trump.) If Fulton County, Georgia, District Attorney Fani Willis makes good on her promise to make charging decisions by the end of summer, a fourth Trump indictment is likely by mid-September.

The pendulum swings

Already in rarified air regarding myriad investigations, Trump, as they say in the small towns lionized by ignorant country singer Jason Aldean, is fixin’ to enter the indictment exosphere. Trump’s legal troubles scorecard is unmatched in the annuals of American politics, possibly in the annuals of American citizenry.

In review, Trump is:

·        Twice impeached.

·        Indicted on 34 felony counts related to falsifying business records, as part of paying hush money to a porn star.

·        Indicted on 37 felony counts related to mishandling classified documents including: obstructing justice; and making false statements.

·        Felony indictments are likely coming soon related to the January 6 insurrection including: conspiracy to defraud the United States; deprivation of rights; and witness tampering.

·        Felony indictments are likely forthcoming related to conspiring to interfere with Georgia’s 2020 presidential election results.

For decades, the pendulum has rested in Trump’s corner. But, eventually, the pendulum swings back. As it looks right now, the pendulum’s momentum against Trump will be difficult to reverse anytime soon.
