THE 500

There is nothing like it

Two years ago, on the eve of the 103rd running of the Indianapolis 500, I published a piece titled, “The Great Spectacle.” That article chronicled my love of the Indy 500 and was an attempt to convey why Indy is so special, still perched as one of the world’s greatest sporting events. The response from readers was immediate and overwhelmingly positive.

In 2020, as the pandemic raged, race fans were left lamenting that we were not permitted to attend the 500-mile race. Adding to our angst, last year’s race was rescheduled away from the traditional Memorial Weekend time slot to mid-August.

Today, as the saying goes, is a new day - with a level of normalcy back. This Memorial Weekend, on Sunday, the Indianapolis 500 will anchor motorsports’ biggest, most important day, with fans in attendance.

One of the best ways to understand, and feel, the Indianapolis 500 is to check out my composition from a few days before the 2019 race. Just sit back and enjoy one of reader’s favorite articles published by The Weekly Opine.
