Joy in the suburbs

How to follow up last week’s trip to the bedazzling Garfield Park Conservatory in Chicago? Why of course, a trip to the Morton Arboretum in suburban Lisle, Illinois. The arboretum was a delight, anointing everyone there with renewing salve as we cope with the pandemic.

As happens this time of year, the weather was slim shady, at least at the outset. Not caring one iota that I was driving my ’76 Torino, accompanied by a friend, Mother Nature treated us to a steady sprinkle, coupled with 40-mph wind gusts, layered on top of dusty, gravel parking lots. The Torino, aka Nellie Belle, turned from shiny, just-waxed black to smudged with brown dirt and dust. However, the sun did break through during the afternoon. It was indeed a splendid day!

Oh, and in a sign my Chicago White Sox have turned the corner, I counted more White Sox caps than Cubs caps while exploring the vast grounds of the arboretum. And I washed the Torino as soon as I returned home.

Go ahead, check out the 15 photos documenting a serene Saturday spent among trees and trolls at the grand Morton Arboretum. (All photos credit The Weekly Opine)
