INCONVENIENT COMMANDMENTS
GOP hysterics and hypocrisy
For the first time in years, I sat and watched the entire Summer Olympics opening ceremony. In prior years, I would check in to see U.S. athletes enter the Olympic stadium, and often that was the extent of my interest in what seems like a routine ceremony. However, learning beforehand that Paris planned something unique, and being relatively aware of the creative genius that permeates France, I settled in with anticipation last Friday to watch the opening ceremony.
Paris nailed it! Having the athletes float down the Seine River in vessels of various shapes and sizes was brilliant. The entertainment, including tightly choreographed dancers, singers (Celine Dion’s performance was spine-tingling), a colorful fashion show with a catwalk across a bridge, and the lighting of the innovative Olympics cauldron, was a visual feast. All accomplished in a downpour!
Naturally, haters of diversity, equity and inclusion lost their minds. So sad to see backward people cling to their fantasy that America should return to a pre-World War II society.
Among those out-of-touch with reality, the Queen of Ignorance, Marjorie Taylor Greene, had another of her frequent mental breakdowns that calls into question her mental stability and her fitness to serve in the United States House of Representatives. Greene proves time and again you do not have to be 81 years old to suffer from mental degradation. It’s a surprise Greene or wimpy House Speaker Mike Johnson are not foolishly trying to subpoena Paris Olympics officials to testify before Congress.
Collectively, Republicans and their clergy reached for their Bibles and made ridiculous, deranged comparisons of the Paris opening ceremony and the Last Supper, along with other lunatic references to the Bible. Which begs us to look at how their mentally unstable, weird presidential candidate fares when it comes to Christianity.
It's crystal clear
As The Weekly Opine did years ago, when anointing then-Vice President Mike Pence with the title “America’s #1 Fake Christian,” it’s time to give Republican’s savior, Trump, the same test. What better guidepost than the Ten Commandments? For all age groups it’s an easy to understand pass/fail test. Here goes:
1. Thou shalt have no other Gods before Me. Trump’s behavior clearly demonstrates a man who believes he is the deity. Trump places accumulating power and money for his own gain above everything else. The accumulation of money drives him, as evidenced by Trump stooping so low as to sell Trump-endorsed Bibles to make money. A prolific, pathological liar, we can safely argue that Trump also places lying above God. FAIL.
2. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image. He boasts about his Trump buildings and places “TRUMP” in large, conspicuous letters on his towers and brags about them incessantly. After the World Trade Center twin towers fell on 9/11, Trump claimed (falsely) that his 40 Wall Street tower was now the tallest building in New York. FAIL.
3. Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain. Trump’s claim that he is a Christian slanders God’s and Jesus’ names. FAIL.
4. Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Trump spends many Sundays playing golf and, according to one of my former work colleagues who years ago played in a celebrity tournament in the same foursome, Trump lies about his score. FAIL.
5. Honor thy father and thy mother. While his father was unsavory, Trump’s boorish behavior does not fit in the category of honoring his father and mother. FAIL.
6. Thou shalt not kill. Trump made a mockery of the covid pandemic. His lies and negligence resulted in the U.S. leading the world in covid-related deaths. Literally hundreds of thousands of people died needlessly because of Trump’s cavalier dismissal of the pandemic during the early stages. FAIL.
7. Thou shalt not commit adultery. Trump, while his third wife was home nursing their 4-month-old baby, committed adultery with a pornography actress in a Nevada hotel room. FAIL.
8. Thou shalt not steal. Trump stole classified documents, including top-secret documents, when he left the White House in January 2021. FAIL.
9. Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor. Trump repeatedly lies about and defames the woman he raped, E. Jean Carroll, claiming he never met her and calling her a hoax. FAIL.
10. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s house or anything that is thy neighbor’s. Trump’s Supreme Court appointments caused the overturning of women’s abortion rights, i.e., Trump covets controlling a woman’s right to make decisions about her body. Trump also covets taking away American’s right to vote by pushing unfair, restrictive voting laws. FAIL.
Trump, who just last week claimed, “I’m a Christian,” does not adhere to any of the Ten Commandments. He is a failure as a (purported) Christian. What does that make anyone claiming to be a Christian who supports Trump? They are all fake Christians. That is a core tenet of being a Republican these days; throw away your dignity by supporting a felon, thus turning yourself into a pretend Christian.
Conservative fake Christians who are outraged because of the Paris opening ceremony need to – as the seemingly omnipresent Snoop Dogg would say – “just chill.”
